New and Different Places to Work Out

Written by Francesca, Monday, January 18th, 2016 in Fitness

Helvellyn_Trail_raceWith a new year comes new goals, and those usually include plans to improve your physique. While the gym scene is certainly the most popular, there are many other venues you can utilize to make working out more interesting and encourage you to go outside your comfort zone. With so many options, there’s no excuse for you not to accomplish your exercise goals this year.

Trails

For runners and walkers, treadmills and tracks can quickly become boring. Heading outside (weather permitting, of course) is better because you’re in sunshine and fresh air and you get a change of scenery. Being out in nature also benefits your overall well-being.

Trails are great to run because they’re not as hard as cement sidewalks and paved roads and thus not as hard on your joints. There are many websites and apps that find running trails near you and include ratings to help you choose the right one for your needs.

Sports Facilities

Exercise isn’t confined to just certain routines. Both good old-fashioned sports and unconventional ones provide many of the same benefits. Take your workout to the:

  • Skating rink
  • Basketball or volleyball court
  • Driving range or golf course (walk it if allowed)
  • Baseball field
  • Soccer or football field
  • Tennis court
  • Wrestling mat
  • Archery range
  • Rock climbing wall
  • Trampoline park

Community Centers

Gyms aren’t the only establishments that offer classes. Community centers do too, and for a much cheaper price. This is a great way to try new workout styles for little money and commitment. It’s also a fun way to try out other methods of exercise, such as dancing or martial arts. Then, if you like the activity, you can take further courses at a gym or other specialized place.
