Every so often, Well Cultured gets an e-mail from a college student desperately needing help to survive college- or a highschooler worried about what to expect. While everyone has a little bit of rough time in college, often the big problems- the life-ending sort of mishaps that leave you with a .5 GPA and no job- can be avoided so long as you do the right stuff. With that being said, here are some of the worst things you can do in college- by some of us who have been there ourselves. One of the biggest downfalls of most otherwise perfect students is not thinking outside of campus- that is, getting caught in the "bubble". A lot of your resume- including your application to graduate school, if you choose to go- is about what you did OUTSIDE of class and school, not necessarily inside. While being part of a wide range of clubs and social groups is wonderful, get your name out in a way that will be permanently good for you- go out and work during the summer, or cultivate some contacts that will help you. Remember, after 4 years (give or take), you'll have to exit the bubble- and all the brownie points you earned within it will be invalidated.
