What do you think of a chambray or plaid shirt with a suit?
A great combination, but don’t go overboard.
When pairing a casual shirt with a suit, the real goal is to allow the shirt to speak for itself, so don’t compete with it — keep the tie simple and flattering, and avoid making anything else the center of attention — and make sure the tie is at least as sturdy as the shirt. For example, if you match a dark gray suit with a chambray shirt, wear a knit tie or at least a very hardy wool/silk tie. For a flannel, be careful to pair the colors correctly (avoid wildly multi-colored flannels, keep it simple), and similarly pair it with a knit tie or heavy wool tie. As a general rule, don’t pair western or military shirts with suits, it looks awkward.
Hope this helps!
