The Problem with Relaxed Fit Jeans

Written by admin, Wednesday, August 12th, 2015 in Q&As

Why are you always insulting “relaxed fit” and similar jeans? Sometimes that’s all that fits.

It’s a question of relative sizing throughout the leg.

The problem with “relaxed fit” and similar jeans is that they are baggy throughout the leg, not just in the thighs and hips.  While I understand there’s a great appeal to having more room where you might have more muscle, “relaxed fit” jeans go way too far in that they make the calves extremely baggy as well.  This is sometimes an equal issue with “straight fit” jeans as well.  Needless to say, excess unwanted fabric generally looks bad, so most people associate “relaxed fit” with “too much fabric.”

That said, if something fits you well, wear it, regardless of the tag.  Everyone is going to have a unique shape serviced differently by different cuts.

Incidentally, I’ll confess that there’s a good argument to be made that our Levi’s Sizing Guide should be updated.  The 514 line seems to be pushed to the background, 501XXes need to be mentioned as an excellent option all-around, and there are a lot of new cuts to be discussed.  I’ll work on it.
