What to wear to class

Written by admin, Monday, September 5th, 2011 in Q&As

What do I wear to class? Lots of people are dressing up and some are showing up in pajamas.

Chances are the former group are freshman and the latter group are seniors. In any event, my advice:

Dress as well as you want to be treated without going overboard. Presuming you’re in college (or hell, even grad school), suits and ties aren’t really mandatory (or necessary) for class. With that being said, however, there’s nothing wrong with dressing up to a degree, and in some circumstances it can pay off well — professors will consider you more prepared and ready, and you’ll generally look better to the opposite sex. Showing up in pajamas makes you look lazy, vaguely unprepared, unattractive, and somewhat lost — an image you don’t want to give regardless of what year of college you’re in.

I definitely agree here. It’s usually best to err on the side of overdressing than underdressing. It isn’t the end of the world if you show up to class once in pajamas, but overall you want to present yourself in class the same way you want other people to see you. If you dress well, you look better and more put together. If you dress like a slob, people will think you are a slob.

Obviously there are a few exceptions (some business majors wear suits and in an art class, you want something that can get dirty), but generally jeans paired with a button-up shirt lets you look tidy without being overly constricted or stuffy.
