Man Bun Or Warrior Knot?

Written by Kate, Tuesday, May 19th, 2015 in Fashion, The Style Guide

manbunLet’s be honest, the phrase “man bun” is off putting. But despite the effeminate wording, this style may have originated with some of the most badass warriors in history. And like most things weird but fascinating, we can thank Japan.
Long before some hipster in So-Cal dubbed it The Man Bun, samurai in Japan called it the chonmage. Warriors took great care when it came to styling their hair and pulled it into a top knot to help keep their helmets in place. Later the look became a status symbol in Japanese society.manbun2

Today the look is less functional and more of a statement, but you don’t have to be Chris Hemsworth to pull it off. A subtle stubble or well groomed beard give accent and emphasis to the carefree but composed look. While the warrior knot may look like it takes only a few seconds to achieve, be warned; long hair requires maintenance and upkeep and is not a style for men who want to spend 5 minutes or less getting ready. That being said, why not try it? If it turns out the bun isn’t your thing, add it to the list of hilarious fashion mishaps you can look back on and laugh; like that powder blue suit you wore to prom…yeesh.
