5 Creative Halloween Costumes You Can Make at Home

Written by Francesca, Monday, October 23rd, 2017 in Fashion, The Style Guide

Got a Halloween party coming up but don’t know what to wear? While everyone else is in the latest superhero outfit or an eye-rolling punny getup, be creative and classy with these five Halloween costume ideas for men. The best part? You can turn any of these into a couple’s costume.

1. Olaf

There are few ways for a guy to dress like a cute children’s character and still keep his man card, and the snowman Olaf from Frozen is one of them. He’s lovable and funny and makes for a cheap costume. Simply cut out black circles from paper or felt and tape them to a white t-shirt. Make the face on a white baseball cap (or use a white hoodie instead of t-shirt), put on some brown gloves, and you’re done!

Girlfriend’s costume: Anna, Elsa, or Sven (the reindeer)

2. Bert (Chimney Sweep from Mary Poppins)

Step in time with a DIY Bert costume! You can find most of his outfit in your own closet: a dress shirt, dark suit, flat cap (newsboy hat), and red scarf. The only thing that requires effort is making the chimney sweep prop. Smudge dirt on your face to complete the look and practice some Dick Van Dyke dance moves to really impress the other party guests.

Girlfriend’s costume: Mary Poppins

3. James Bond

Not a Disney fan and want something more sophisticated? Bond – James Bond – is the way to go. Don your sharpest suit and accessorize with a bow tie, handkerchief or flower in the breast pocket, and a gun. Remember to keep a serious face, too.

Girlfriend’s costume: Any of Bond’s romantic interests or Miss Moneypenny

4. Explorer

Are you the outdoorsy type? Raid your camping gear for an explorer costume. Choose an old-fashioned look complete with moustache and leather gloves, go with an adventurous Indiana Jones style, or keep it simple with a button-up shirt or vest, khaki bottoms, boots, a hat, and binoculars.

Girlfriend’s costume: Fellow explorer, animal, or treasure

5. Lego brick

All you need is a large box painted in the color of your choice and paper plates or bowls in the same color glued on to look like a Lego brick. Wear clothing in the same color as well, or all black if that’s all you’ve got.

Girlfriend’s costume: Lego brick or Lego person

Additional ideas for cardboard-box costumes are:

  • Box of candy or vending machine
  • Dice
  • iPhone
  • Rubik’s cube
  • A crayon in a crayon box (just wear all of one color)
  • Boombox
  • X-ray machine
  • Aquarium
  • French fry in a carton
  • Microwave
  • Computer monitor or TV

Your costume may not be the fanciest one at the party, but it will probably be the most memorable!
