Longer Shorts are Coming Back in Style

Written by Kate Ferguson, Wednesday, August 9th, 2017 in Fashion, Seasonal Fashion

At one point in time long shorts were popular, and then they were replaced with the above the knee variety. We’ve been in that area for some time now. But as flattering at the above the knee shorts can be, occasionally the trend just shifts. Right now it seems to be shifting into the longer styles again. The style is more reminiscent of the 1990’s grunge stage in time.

If you happen to have any clothing left over from that era then your time to pull it out has finally come. The longer and looser styles of shorts have been spotted on the fashion runways, as well as on a few different celebs. Baggy shorts styles that we haven’t seen in years made a comeback on runways for the Tommy Hilfiger Spring-Summer 2018 collection, Gosha Rubchinskiy Spring-Summer 2018, and Louis Vuitton Spring-Summer 2018.

The longer cut of the shorts can be paired with casual t-shirts, sweatshirts, and sneakers for the ultimate in a comfortable casual look. They are less likely to pair well with a structured blazer or something, but you never know. Anything is possible and nothing should be ruled out until you actually try the look out.

Celebs who have already been sporting the look include Shia LaBeouf and Frank Ocean. The look is undoubtedly more casual than the tailored above the knee style of shorts, so don’t expect a complete swap over to the style. The new version of the older cut will probably start popping up for casual and weekend wear, but it’s unlikely to take over the entire shorts market.

Let’s be honest, cutoff baggy denim shorts won’t be welcomed at every office out there. But the tailored variety often are. To make shorts work in a professional environment they should be fitted in a flattering and appropriate way without being too casual. It works well to keep it structured on top when wearing shorts at work, such as wearing a button down shirt or a pairing a t-shirt with a blazer. Simply wearing a t-shirt with shorts can veer into too casual territory, which should be saved for happy hour.

Some men have a hard time finding the ideal fit and style in shorts, since the options seem to be a bit more limited than they are with women. There is a lot more debate over when they are appropriate and when they are not. But the simple fact is that shorts keep the legs cooler than pants do, and when it’s hot a pair of shorts will often make the most sense. Whether that happens to be a long pair or a very short pair, that will be up to you.

No matter what the current trending style of shorts happens to be, it’s important to choose a pair that feels comfortable. Not just in fabric, but in cut as well. After all, it’s pretty hard to make a fashion statement if you don’t feel confident in what you’re wearing.
