Written by Thad, Thursday, May 28th, 2015 in Alcohol Culture

drink-384191_640We all have our habits – our favorite pair of jeans or that perfectly worn t-shirt – and the same thing happens when we go to imbibe. Here are a few simple summer drink trades for your next party or date night:

Are you a Mojito man?

Once the temps rise, do your thoughts drift to old Havana? Do mint and lime help to cool your summer nights? Ditch your mojito for Brazil’s national drink, the caipirinha! It is as easy to make – muddle half a lime cut in 4 wedges with a sprinkle of sugar and a bunch of mint in an old fashioned glass, fill with crushed ice, and top with Cachaça. Can’t find cachaça, use vodka and you have made a caipiroshka.

Tired of Sangria?

In England, once summer rolls around it is time for a fruit cups (and not the kid’s lunch box kind)! The most popular brand is Pimm’s. Like sangria, Pimm’s is perfect for a party. It is made by the pitcher with fruit and herbs – try apples, cucumbers, strawberries, orange, lemon, lime, mint, and borage. So, if your social calendar includes any polo matches or garden shows, definitely add Pimm’s to your repertoire, but even if you are just having some bangers in the back garden, “It’s Pimm’s o’clock.”

Wanna drink like a President?

Before Prohibition, hard cider was America’s most popular beverage. Safer than water in most places, it was consumed by man, woman, and child. George Washington served up 144 gallons of it to win election in 1758. Thomas Jefferson praised America’s apples as the best in the world and devoted significant land at Monticello to their production. Benjamin Franklin drank and boasted regularly about cider and its usefulness as a social drink. President John Adams drank a large tankard of cider every morning, believing that it promoted good health and longevity. Today, cider production is making a return to apple growing regions throughout America and should have a place at everybody’s summer party!
